چکیده

This paper reports on a laser speckle technique based on that which was first developed by Russo [1] to measure surface roughness. The technique has been extended to image surface roughness using laser scanning. A one dimensional laser scan is used with the second dimension required for imaging provided by movement of the surface. The technique uses two orthogonally polarised laser beams at a slight relative angle to each other to produce two independent speckle patterns that are imaged and auto-correlated to deduce the roughness of the surface being illuminated. The offset angle between the beams is a plane orthogonal to the scan direction and is relatively insensitive to scan position. Results to date are promising but show an unwanted variation of the auto-correlation value with the average brightness of the surface. This paper discusses the method, results and outlines further work required.

Estimation of Articular Cartilage Surface Roughness Using Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix of Laser Speckle Image

The application of He-Ne laser technologies for description of articular cartilage degeneration, one of the most common diseases worldwide, is an innovative usage of these technologies used primarily in material engineering. Plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging are insufficient to allow the early assessment of the disease. As surface roughness of articular cartilage is an important ...

A Simple Algorithm to Relate Measured Surface Roughness to Equivalent Sand-grain Roughness

One of the most important resources available in the field of fluid mechanics, the Moody Chart gives Darcy friction factor as a function of Reynolds number and relative roughness. The experimentalists who generated the data correlated in the Moody Chart, however, roughened pipe surfaces by coating their internal surfaces with a monolayer of sand, the pipe wall roughness being defined as the ave...

Surface Roughness Studies of Finger Prints Using Speckle Interferometry

Measurement and control of surface roughness are important in many fields, such as magnetic media, semiconductor processing and optics. Typical roughness measurements are performed using stylus profilers, non-contact optical profilers, or scanning probe microscopes (SPM).An experimental approach for surface roughness evaluation based on the speckle pattern imaging has been attempted in this wor...

Grinding surface roughness measurement based on the co-occurrence matrix of speckle pattern texture.

Surface speckle pattern intensity distribution resulting from laser light scattering from a rough surface contains various information about the surface geometrical and physical properties. A surface roughness measurement technique based on the texture analysis of surface speckle pattern texture images is put forward. In the surface roughness measurement technique, the speckle pattern texture i...

Surface roughness measurement using dichromatic speckle pattern: an experimental study.

Surface roughness is studied experimentally by making use of the statistical properties of dichromatic speckle patterns. The rms intensity difference between two speckle patterns produced by two argon laser lines are analyzed in the far field as functions of the object surface roughness and the difference in the two wavenumbers of the illuminating light. By applying previously derived formulas,...
